Pontus Larsen is a researcher at Linköping University affiliated with both the Department of Culture and Society (IKOS) and the Department of History, Art History and Religious Studies (HKR). His work focuses on social studies education in Swedish primary schools, particularly examining how historical knowledge is used to shape students' identities and values.
His research interests center on the meaning-making dimensions of social studies subjects, with particular attention to questions of nation, gender, identity, and how students and teachers engage with history. Larsen employs ethnographic approaches including classroom observations and interviews with both teachers and students to investigate how schooling contributes to forming students' perspectives on democracy and social responsibility.
Larsen's recent publications reveal a consistent focus on how historical narratives in classrooms both transmit and challenge nationalist ideologies, with particular attention to gender negotiations and value education. His work demonstrates how teachers use historical and contemporary examples to illustrate and problematize concepts around Swedishness, equal value, and justice.
Larsen teaches history, cultural heritage, and religion within teacher education programs and standalone courses, while mentoring students at both basic and advanced levels. He is also involved in the DISA (Didactics in Social Subjects) research program, which examines teaching conditions and implementation across various social studies subjects and school forms.
