Associate Professor Anna Hurlimann is an academic in Urban Planning at the University of Melbourne's Melbourne School of Design. Her research emphasizes environmentally sustainable cities, with a focus on sustainable water management and climate change adaptation strategies. Anna has secured grants from the Australian Research Council, Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment, and the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Quality and Treatment, among others. Her work explores community attitudes toward alternative water sources, planning policies for effective catchment management, and equitable outcomes in coastal adaptation to sea-level rise. She also contributes to curriculum development for sustainability education in built environment professions.
Anna’s research projects analyze barriers and facilitators to climate change action across urban planning, architecture, and landscape design sectors. She investigates how policy instruments can better align with global emission reduction targets and advocates for transformative approaches in built environment practices. Her recent studies include case analyses of Mandalay City (Myanmar) for urban fire risk reduction and Victoria, Australia, for solar panel implementation in heritage buildings. Anna actively engages with industry stakeholders and policymakers to bridge knowledge gaps and enhance professional competencies in climate-responsive design and planning.
- Featured Projects:
- Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation in Built Environments
- Assessment of Social and Equity Outcomes in Sea-Level Rise Adaptation
- Curriculum Development for Sustainability in Professional Degrees
Her research narrative addresses both academic and practical challenges, including policy effectiveness, practitioner preparedness, and community engagement. Anna’s work highlights the need for systemic reforms in construction and property sectors to achieve climate resilience. She has also contributed to empirical studies on landscape architects' agency in climate actions and planners' capacity development through continuing education programs.
