Anna Houmann is a Senior Lecturer in Music Education at Lund University's Malmö Academy of Music, specializing in teachers' discretionary power, pedagogical creativities, and assessment practices. She coordinates educational sciences courses for graduate and master's levels in the music teacher program and leads international collaborations including the U21 Ideal School Project with universities in Hong Kong, Auckland, Johannesburg, and Lund.
Her research examines micro-moments in music teaching through frameworks of discretionary power—defined as teachers' professional assessments navigating external constraints (national curricula, school organization) and internal conceptions. Current work explores participatory formats, vocal health in opera choristers, and EDI transformations in Swedish music education. She investigates how teachers transcend structural limitations through knowledge, will, and action, with emphasis on sustainability and international perspectives.
Scientific awards include:
- Lund University Student Council Teaching Award (2016)
- Student Council Pedagogical Prize at Malmö Academy of Music (2004)
She supervises doctoral candidates like Johanna Antonsson on music teachers' assessment practices in Swedish compulsory schools, examining social constructionist perspectives on grading. Her grant portfolio includes active projects such as 'Shaping the Music Teachers of Tomorrow' (2025-2026) and 'The Teacher Education Academy for Music' (2023-2026), alongside SIDA/Linneaus Palme initiatives building music education capacity at Vietnam National Academy of Music.
Houmann co-leads the CROCUS research network on cultural spaces and creativity conditions, and serves on Lund University's International Women's Day committee. Her work connects with UN Sustainable Development Goals through educational innovation and cross-cultural exchange.
