Professor Greenspan's research focuses on the intersection of urban development, digital technology, and cultural transformation. Her work explores how cities like Shanghai are redefining modernity through unique combinations of traditional elements and cutting-edge technologies. She examines the philosophical implications of emerging media forms and their impact on urban life, particularly in Chinese contexts. Her approach combines rigorous academic inquiry with hands-on digital humanities projects, creating bridges between theoretical frameworks and lived urban experiences.
Her publications reveal a consistent focus on Chinese urban futures and media philosophy, with particular attention to Shanghai as a case study for understanding global urban transformation. Her work demonstrates how Chinese cities are not merely imitating Western models but actively reinventing concepts of modernity and futurity through their unique historical and cultural contexts.
Professor Greenspan has established herself as a leader in digital humanities through initiatives like the Shanghai Studies Society and Hacked Matter research hub. Her Moveable Feasts project, which maps Shanghai's street food culture, exemplifies her commitment to using digital tools to document and analyze urban cultural practices.
