Angela Xiao Wu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University (NYU), part of the Steinhardt School. Her research bridges media studies, science and technology studies (STS), and China studies, focusing on intersections between media technologies, knowledge production, and politics. She holds a PhD from Northwestern University, an M.Phil. from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and a B.A. from Tsinghua University.
Her work examines data-driven knowledge systems, platform governance, and media policy in China, with recent projects exploring 'The News Utility: Media, Platforms, and System Management in China.' Key areas include critical data studies, affective computing, and the political economy of digital platforms. Her research has been supported by ACLS, Henry Luce Foundation, and Berkman Klein Center fellowships.
Publications highlight methodological innovation (e.g., rethinking China as a 'black box'), historical analysis (e.g., post-Mao media reforms), and sociotechnical critiques of surveillance and platform epistemologies. She teaches courses on algorithmic cultures, media theory, and Chinese media in the global context.
