Dr. Anna Bortolan is a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Swansea University's School of Social Sciences, within the Department of Politics, Philosophy and International Relations. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from Durham University (2016) and previously served as a Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen and a Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellow at University College Dublin. Her research focuses on phenomenology, philosophy of emotion, and philosophy of psychiatry, exploring intersections between emotions, narratives, and self-understanding, particularly in psychopathological contexts and digital environments.
Education: PhD in Philosophy (Durham University, 2016); Prior academic roles include postdoctoral fellowships and lecturing positions in Ireland and Scotland.
Research Interests: Her work examines emotional experiences in mental health conditions like depression and borderline personality disorder, the role of narratives in self-constitution, and the impact of digital technologies on emotional life. Key themes include epistemic emotions, self-trust, and the phenomenology of social anxiety.
Grants & Projects: Recipient of the Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship (2016–2018) for research on self-esteem phenomenology.
Teaching & Supervision: Teaches modules on critical reasoning, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of mental health. Currently supervises PhD and MA students on topics such as Hannah Arendt's political philosophy and ontology via emergence.
Presentations & Engagement: Active in international conferences, presenting on topics like empathy in depression, online emotion frameworks, and pandemic-era mental health dynamics. Co-edited Empathy, Intersubjectivity, and the Social World (2022).
