Anna Aksmann

Anna Aksmann serves as a full Professor at the University of Gdańsk's Faculty of Biology within the Department of Experimental Biology and Plant Biotechnology. Her research is centered at the Plant Physiology and Toxicology Laboratory where she investigates microalgal responses to environmental stressors. She maintains active research collaborations through the Faculty of Biology's extensive network of academic partnerships.

Her research focuses on the acclimatization mechanisms of aquatic plants to chemical pollutants, with particular expertise in the role of Early Light Induced Proteins (ELIPs) and antioxidant enzymes under stress conditions. She examines photosynthetic apparatus functionality when exposed to heavy metals, herbicides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) using model organisms like Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Desmodesmus armatus. Her work bridges molecular physiology with environmental toxicology to assess ecological risks of emerging contaminants.

Analysis of her recent publications (2024-2025) reveals a strong emphasis on nanoplastic toxicity, pharmaceutical pollution in aquatic systems, and mitochondrial dysfunction in algae exposed to NSAIDs. Her research methodology frequently employs chlorophyll fluorescence measurements, oxidative stress biomarkers, and isolated chloroplast systems to pinpoint molecular mechanisms of toxicity. The work demonstrates consistent focus on translating laboratory findings to real-world environmental risk assessment.
