AnnMarie Perl is an Associate Research Scholar and Lecturer in the Department of Art & Archaeology at Princeton University. Her research examines the intersection of modern and contemporary art with broader cultural, social, and political contexts, with a focus on France and the United States from the 1930s to the 1980s. She holds a Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University (2014).
Her current projects include Showmanship: The Spectacularization of Painting in the United States and Europe, 1930s–1960s, exploring overlooked 'spectacle' artworks, and From Kitsch to Criticality: Jeff Koons and the American Avant-Garde, analyzing shifts in avant-garde practices. She co-edits a volume on 1980s American art ethics with Anthony Grudin.
Teaching emphasizes hands-on engagement with art objects, including field trips to museums and studios. Courses include Art 214: Contemporary Art Survey, Supply-side Aesthetics: American Art in the Age of Reagan, and Avant-Gardism & (Anti) Capitalism.
Her work is supported by fellowships at NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts and the Remarque Institute (École Normale Supérieure, Paris). She has organized conferences like Political Values, Market Values, Art Values at Princeton, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue on art ethics.
Perl advises undergraduate independent work in art history and studio art, bridging academic and creative practices.
