Owen's work explores how economic growth varies across nations, the role of ethnic fractionalization in development, and the influence of banks on long-term growth. She has also investigated happiness inequality, labor unions' impact on life satisfaction, and the predictive power of Google Trends for consumption forecasts. Her recent publication with Andrew Wei '20 examines media confirmation bias and its electoral implications using Google search data.
Her academic output reveals trends in macroeconomic analysis, inequality studies, and media economics, often integrating data science and behavioral economics methodologies. Owen's collaborations with students span topics like foreign exchange market efficiency (Brent Palmer '11), socially responsible investment (Yejun Qian '08), and development economics (Greg Casey '09).
