Dr. Viva R. Horowitz is Assistant Professor of Physics at Hamilton College and Courtesy Research Assistant Professor at the University of Oregon. She directs research in quantum emitters, nanomechanical systems, and microfluidics. Her educational background includes a PhD in Physics from UC Santa Barbara and postdoctoral positions at Harvard (dynamic artificial cells) and Caltech (opto-mechanical gyroscopes).
Research encompasses quantum systems and applied physics:
- Quantum emitter fabrication in 2D materials
- Network analysis of nanomechanical resonators
- Microfluidic platforms for biological modeling
- Spin-based sensing with optically trapped nanodiamonds
Recent publications demonstrate methodological innovation in resonator network characterization and graphene-based NEMS devices. Collaborative work with University of Oregon focuses on scalable resonator networks, while microfluidics research enables artificial cytoplasm modeling for cellular biophysics.
Honors include the Sidney Wertimer Teaching Award and multiple mentoring recognitions.
