Associate Professor Ann Kwan is affiliated with the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at The University of Sydney. She holds memberships in The Centre for Drug Discovery Innovation and The University of Sydney Nano Institute. Her research focuses on cross-disciplinary approaches to combat antimicrobial resistance, including engineering antimicrobial coatings for implants and developing novel drug strategies against infectious diseases.
She earned her PhD in biochemistry from the University of Sydney in 2005, followed by postdoctoral research at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the University of Sydney. Her accolades include an Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship (ARC) and four Young Investigator Awards.
- Research Themes: Functional amyloid engineering, antibacterial coatings, omics technologies, computational biology.
- Current Projects: Grant-funded initiatives include antibacterial hydrophobin coatings for implants and oxidative stress therapies for cancer.
Her lab employs techniques spanning molecular biology, computational modeling, structural biology, and biophysics. Recent work highlights include AI-driven RNA-binding protein analysis and collaborations on early disease detection strategies.
- Awards: Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship (2006), Four Young Investigator Awards (various years).
Lab operations temporarily relocated due to renovations, with key members like Jameel, Esther, and Sienna advancing projects. Active in training highly motivated students through Honours and ANISE Pathway Scholarships.
