Professor Ann Daly is a distinguished researcher and academic at Newcastle University's Faculty of Medical Sciences, where she serves as Professor of Pharmacogenetics within the Translational and Clinical Research Institute. With over 40 years of academic experience at Newcastle University, she has established herself as a leading expert in pharmacogenetics, particularly focusing on liver disease and drug-induced liver injury. Her research has significant implications for personalized medicine and clinical pharmacology.
Professor Daly completed her BA and PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Dublin in 1978 and 1982 respectively. She conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Geneva and Trinity College Dublin before joining Newcastle University, where she progressed from Research Associate to her current Professorial position. She was elected Fellow of the British Pharmacological Society in 2012 and became a Member of Academia Europaea in 2023.
Her research interests center on pharmacogenetic studies of novel human genetic polymorphisms, their functional significance, and relationship to drug therapy outcomes, adverse drug reactions, and liver diseases. She coordinates the iDILIC network on genetics of drug-induced liver injury and contributes to several major international projects including TransBioLine, LITMUS, GenomALC, and OPPM. Her work bridges fundamental genetic research with clinical applications to develop personalized treatment approaches.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), with particular emphasis on genetic and molecular mechanisms, biomarker discovery, and the role of pharmacogenomics in understanding disease progression and treatment response. Her research increasingly incorporates multi-omics approaches, integrating transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic data to understand complex disease pathways.

Professor Daly actively contributes to the scientific community through leadership roles including Chair of the European Society of Pharmacogenomics and Personalised Therapy (2023-2024), Vice-chair of the IUPHAR Pharmacogenetics subcommittee (2018-2023), and membership on the Pharmacovigilance Expert Advisory Group for the Commission on Human Medicines, MHRA. She serves as Senior Editor for the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and on the editorial boards of several leading pharmacology journals. Her research is supported by multiple international collaborations and funding sources focused on translating genetic discoveries into clinical practice.
