Assistant Professor Ankie Hazen is affiliated with the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care at Utrecht University, Netherlands. She lectures on pharmacotherapy and leads the implementation of general practice pharmacists in the Netherlands. Her clinical background includes work as a pharmacist independent prescriber at a GP surgery in London (2018-2021) and as a general practice pharmacist in the Netherlands.
Her research focuses on Pharmacotherapy, Primary Care Pharmacy, and Pharmacist Prescribing, investigating the integration of pharmacists into general practice, medication safety, and educational development for primary care pharmacists. She examines clinical effects of pharmacist interventions in chronic disease management, particularly for pulmonary conditions requiring long-term antibiotics.
Recent publications reveal a dominant trend in pharmacist prescribing roles across Dutch and European primary care settings. Her work analyzes professional perspectives, implementation barriers, and clinical outcomes related to antibiotic stewardship and deprescribing, demonstrating how expanded pharmacist roles improve medication management in chronic conditions.
Dr. Hazen serves as an educational supervisor for primary care pharmacists and contributes to GP specialty training in Utrecht. She leads national implementation projects for general practice pharmacists while maintaining active clinical engagement through her PhD-derived expertise on pharmacist integration and clinical impact.
