Prof. Anja Widdig is a Professor of Behavioural Ecology at the University of Leipzig and a Bridge Professor between the University of Leipzig and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. She leads the Research Group 'Primate Behavioural Ecology' and the 'Macaca Nigra Project' in Indonesia. Her research focuses on primate social behavior, ecology, and conservation, with a particular emphasis on kinship dynamics, reproductive strategies, and conservation education.
Educations: PhD in Ethology (Humboldt University Berlin, 2002); Diploma in Biology (Humboldt University Berlin, 1996); Undergraduate studies in Biology (Humboldt University Berlin, 1992–1994) and the University of Edinburgh, UK (1993–1994).
Research Interests:
- Primate social behavior and ecology
- Genetics and kinship in primate populations
- Conservation of endangered primates
- Chemical communication and sensory ecology
Awards and Recognition: Emmy Noether Fellow (DFG), Admission to AcademiaNet, and leadership roles in iDiv and conservation initiatives.
Labs and Projects: Co-Director of the Macaca Nigra Project in Indonesia; leads interdisciplinary research teams on primate behavior and conservation.
