Dr. Jerome Micheletta is an Associate Professor in Animal Behaviour at the University of Portsmouth, UK. He is affiliated with the School of Psychology, Sport and Health Sciences within the Faculty of Science & Health, and co-directs the Macaca Nigra Project. His research focuses on the evolution of social communication, particularly in crested macaques, integrating field observations with cognitive experiments. He leads the NetFACS project funded by the Leverhulme Trust, developing novel frameworks to study facial communication using network analysis.
Education: PhD (2012, studying crested macaque communication), MSc Eco-physiology and Ethology (2007, Louis Pasteur University), BSc Zoology (Henry Poincaré University, Nancy). Prior to his academic role, he worked as a field assistant in Indonesia.
Research interests center on social complexity and communication complexity in primates. His work spans facial behavior analysis, multimodal signaling, and conservation biology around Tangkoko Nature Reserve. Recent studies include equine facial behavior evolution and large-scale macaque comparative research. He supervises PhD projects on topics like anthropogenic impacts on macaque behavior and facial expression networks.
Teaching responsibilities include coordinating research projects for BSc Psychology and MRes Science programs, and animal behavior modules. His lab collaborations involve the Centre for Comparative and Evolutionary Psychology.
