Anja Scheffers

Professor Anja Scheffers serves as Associate Dean (Education) in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Southern Cross University. She holds a PhD and DSc from Duisburg-Essen University and an MS from the University of Bonn. Her research focuses on coastal geomorphology, paleoenvironmental reconstruction, and natural hazards, particularly tsunamis and tropical cyclones. She co-leads Future Earth Coasts, a global network advancing coastal science and sustainability.

Her work integrates field studies, geochronology (ESR/U-series), and historical data to understand coastal evolution across timescales. Key themes include climate-tectonic interactions, human impacts, and disaster risk assessment. Recent publications emphasize methodological advancements in tsunami modeling, boulder transport analysis, and ethical debates around fossil ownership.

Prof. Scheffers has contributed to coastal hazard frameworks through initiatives like the Rapid Ocean Assessment Methodology. Her transdisciplinary approach bridges policy and science, addressing sustainable development challenges. Despite her administrative role, she maintains active research in palaeoclimatology and coastal processes.
