Anja Mueller is a Professor and Head of School at the School of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Pharmacology, University of East Anglia. She holds a Biology degree from the University of the Saar (1995) and a PhD in Virology from the University Hospital Homburg/Saar (1999). Her career includes postdoctoral research at the University of Reading and Imperial College London before joining UEA in 2004 as Lecturer in Molecular Pharmacology, progressing to Senior Lecturer (2009) and Professor (2020).
Her research focuses on chemokine receptors (e.g., CCR5, CXCR4) as GPCRs involved in HIV co-receptor functions and cancer cell migration. Key areas include receptor regulation, signaling pathways (e.g., calcium flux, PKC/PKD activation), and therapeutic target development. Active projects include collaborations on antimicrobial cyclic peptides and cancer drug discovery (e.g., Royal Commission Fellowship).
Major contributions include identifying signaling networks in chemotaxis and developing fluorescent tools like IS4-FAM for CXCR4 studies. She coordinates the Applied Immunology and Infectious Diseases module and participates in initiatives addressing race relations in science. Over 15 former students have graduated under her supervision, contributing to her lab’s expertise in molecular pharmacology and cell migration mechanisms.
