Prof Anja Lowit is a Professor of Speech and Language Therapy at the University of Strathclyde, affiliated with the Health and Wellbeing School. She specializes in motor speech disorders, particularly dysarthria, and collaborates with engineers, computer scientists, and healthcare professionals to advance patient-centered interventions. Her interdisciplinary work includes developing telehealth systems and outcome measurement frameworks.
Lowit holds advanced qualifications: a BA(Hons) in Linguistics and Language Pathology from the University of Reading and a PhD in Speech and Language Therapy from Newcastle University. Her leadership roles include Vice-Dean for Research (2013–2017) and Deputy Associate Principal for Research (2018–2022). She co-leads the University’s Centre for Sustainable Development.
Her research focuses on acoustic analysis of speech disorders, prosodic difficulties in neurodegenerative conditions, and service delivery models. Key projects include Parkinson’s disease speech interventions and studies on aging-related communication challenges. She supervises PhD candidates like Laura Manderson (focusing on aging and cognition-speech links).
Teaching expertise spans clinical linguistics, instrumental speech analysis, and adult communication disorders. She contributes to international education via external examiner roles and EU course accreditation panels.
