Dr. Anja Harrison is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Neuroscience Education at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King's College London. She serves as Programme Leader for the Psychology and Neuroscience distance learning MSc course, a role she assumed in September 2023 after joining as a Senior Teaching Fellow in 2021. Previously, she held positions as a Teaching Fellow/Content Advisor at King's College London (since 2016) and as a Health Psychology Lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire. She completed her PhD in Psychoneuroimmunology at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf in 2014, focusing on comorbid depression in multiple sclerosis.
Her research integrates psychology and biology, with emphasis on:
- Psychoneuroimmunology and biobehavioral approaches
- Mental health in chronic conditions (multiple sclerosis, HIV, inflammatory bowel disease)
- Development of digital interventions for depression
- Science communication and open-access education
Her publications demonstrate a consistent focus on neuroimmune interactions in depression, particularly in neurological disorders (multiple sclerosis, epilepsy) and pregnancy. Recent work emphasizes randomized controlled trials of online psychological interventions and biomarker studies in chronic illnesses.
Dr. Harrison founded The Collaborative Library (TCL), an award-winning open-access repository of scientific lay summaries generated through academic assessments. She maintains an international network with UNESCO, UKRN, and the Knowledge Equity Network to advance accessible science.
She mentors students across BSc, MSc, and PhD levels, emphasizing partnership, equity, and empowerment in academic development. Her public engagement includes podcasts/webinars for UKRI and UKCORR, aligning with her commitment to democratizing scientific knowledge.
