Anita Mixon

Dr. Anita Mixon is an Assistant Professor in the Communication department at Wayne State University, specializing in African American rhetoric and social uplift advocacy. She directs the COM 1010 Basic Speech course and focuses on rhetorical criticism and antiracist pedagogy.

Her research examines how Black speakers and activists use rhetorical traditions to shape public discourse, policy, and social movements. She bridges rhetorical studies with real-world applications for social justice, currently developing a monograph on Black maternal health narratives.

Dr. Mixon teaches courses such as Oral Communication, Rhetorical Criticism, and Rhetoric of Visual Culture. Her office hours are Mondays 1pm-3:30pm and Tuesdays 4pm-5:30pm in 539 Manoogian Hall.
