Anita Carrasco is a Professor of Anthropology at Luther College, located in Koren 308. Her work focuses on the socio-environmental impacts of mining on indigenous communities in the Atacama region of Chile. She holds a Ph.D. (2010) and M.A. (2007) in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Arizona, and a B.A. (2003) in Anthropology from Universidad Academia de Humanismo Cristiano in Santiago, Chile. Her research explores themes such as corporate ethics, water rights, and indigenous resistance to extractive industries.
Dr. Carrasco’s research projects include analyzing the clash between corporate and indigenous water rights in the Andes, and investigating historical narratives of mining-company relations shaped by figures like engineer William E. Rudolph. Her work highlights contrasts between past mining practices perceived as equitable and current exploitative dynamics.
Her publications span topics like indigenous environmental activism, corporate social responsibility, and ethnography of resource extraction. She teaches courses on global consumer culture, anthropological theory, and environmental anthropology.
