Dr. Anisha Wijeyesekera is an Associate Professor at the University of Reading, affiliated with the Food Microbial Sciences Unit (FMSU). She holds roles including Co-Director of Postgraduate Research Studies and Module Convenor for Fundamental Biochemistry in Food and Nutrition (FB1BFN). Her research focuses on metabolic phenotyping, microbiome interactions, and diet-related health markers. She earned a PhD in Chemistry (Imperial College London, 2009), MSc in Bioinformatics (University of Exeter, 2004), and BSc in Biomedical Sciences (University of Durham, 2003).
Research interests include:
- 1H-NMR and LC-MS-based metabolic profiling of biological samples
- Age and diet-associated health markers
- Functional microbiome studies and gut-host interactions
Her recent articles (2020–2025) explore prebiotics like human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), inulin-type fructans, and their effects on gut microbiota, mood, and metabolic health. Key themes include dietary interventions for gastrointestinal and cardiovascular conditions, and metabolic profiling in clinical settings. Collaborative work spans clinical trials, in vitro models, and population studies.
Dr. Wijeyesekera has contributed to over 35 peer-reviewed publications and co-authored chapters on environmental and nutritional NMR applications. She actively engages in interdisciplinary research, bridging microbiology, metabolomics, and food science. Her work emphasizes translational research for improving dietary guidelines and clinical outcomes.
