Angeline S. Lillard

Angeline S. Lillard is Commonwealth Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia and Director of the Montessori Science Program. She leads the Early Development Lab, focusing on children's social and cognitive development with special emphasis on Montessori education as a form of playful learning.

Her research spans Developmental Psychology, Social Development, Cognitive Development, Montessori Education, and Children's Play. Dr. Lillard has extensively studied pretend play, fantasy in children's cognition, and the effectiveness of Montessori methods in promoting educational equity. Current projects include "The Impact of Montessori Preschools on U.S. Preschoolers," an IES-funded collaboration with AIR involving approximately 600 children, and research examining Montessori as a culturally responsive pedagogy alternative to "no excuses" school models.

Dr. Lillard's publications demonstrate a consistent focus on educational equity, cognitive development through play, and rigorous evaluation of Montessori methods. Her recent work shows growing attention to racial and ethnic parity in educational outcomes, discipline disproportionality, and the long-term impacts of Montessori education on alumni.
