Professor Angela Clow is a distinguished academic at the University of Westminster with expertise spanning neuropharmacology, physiology, and psychology. She has been a faculty member since 1989 and is a founding member of the interdisciplinary Psychophysiology and Stress Research Group (PSRG). Her academic journey began with a PhD from the Institute of Psychiatry, London, where she investigated brain dopamine receptors, followed by post-doctoral studies at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School focusing on stress biochemistry.
Her research primarily centers on the cortisol awakening response (CAR), examining its relationships with aging, cognitive function, attachment style, seasonality, and health. She has a particular interest in how light and seasonal variations affect human health and performance. Professor Clow has established significant collaborations across the university, notably with Professor Frank Hucklebridge, Carly Wood, and Dr. Alizon Draper, and has secured substantial research funding from prestigious organizations including the Wellcome Trust, Nuffield Foundation, Bial Foundation, Department of Work and Pensions, and Higher Education Innovation Fund.
Her work demonstrates consistent focus on psychophysiology, psychoneuroimmunology, physiological psychology, health psychology, and well-being across multiple publications. Her research spans diverse contexts including Parkinson's disease, cognitive function in aging populations, stress reactivity, and the physiological aspects of well-being. The breadth of her work is evident in her publications across journals in endocrinology, neuroscience, psychology, gerontology, and respiratory medicine.

Professor Clow is currently supervising three PhD students (Robin Law, Natasha Madhewoo, and Lucy Forbes) and has previously supervised several doctoral researchers including Lucy Smith, Natasha Ramachandran, Nina Smyth, and Cathrine Fredhoi. Her research has been consistently funded through multiple projects examining cortisol secretion, stress response, and their implications for health and disease.
She is an active contributor to her field through the Centre for Resilience, Psychobiology and Health Psychology, and the Psychophysiology and Stress Research Group, where her work continues to advance understanding of the complex relationships between physiological stress responses and human health outcomes.
