Dr. Matos investigates how queer youth are represented in literature and media, challenging normative frameworks around identity, family, and space. His work explores queer YA literature, teen cinema, and video games through lenses of Latinx studies, critical theory, and intersectional identity analysis.
His recent publications address themes such as:
- Queer subversion of familial norms in Adam Silvera’s They Both Die at the End (2023)
- Crisis of normativity in suburban spaces via Love, Simon (2021)
- Queer potentialities in The Legend of Zelda (2021)
He co-edited Media Crossroads: Intersections of Space and Identity in Screen Cultures (Duke UP, 2021) and frequently shares his work at national conferences and institutions like the University of British Columbia and the University of Antwerp.
Dr. Matos also designs pedagogical frameworks for teaching gender and queerness in YA literature, emphasizing deconstruction of binaries and trans narratives.
