Anette Wickström is a Senior Associate Professor at Linköping University's Department of Thematic Studies (TEMA), specializing in Child and Youth Studies. Her research focuses on children’s and young people’s agency, societal norms, medical practices, and the impact of social media on health perceptions. She employs ethnographic methods, including participant observation and interviews, to explore how youth negotiate public discourses on health and wellbeing.
Her work spans projects such as 'Apps and downs: Mental health and teenage girls’ interpretations of social media content' and 'A Feminist Analysis of Medical Screening.' She has conducted fieldwork in Sweden and South Africa, examining topics like orthodontic practices, mental health screening, and marginalized families' health strategies.
Research funding includes FORTE grants (2020–2024) and projects supported by the Swedish Research Council. Wickström coordinates interdisciplinary initiatives under the 'Profile area Societal Transformations' and contributes to the Centre for Medical Humanities and Bioethics. Her research highlights how social media influencers shape health narratives and critiques societal norms around mental health and body image.
