Anette Therkelsen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Culture and Learning at Aalborg University's Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. She serves as Director of the PhD School and leads research on sociocultural aspects of sustainability and green transitions. Her work bridges consumer studies, cultural analysis, and communication with a focus on place consumers (tourists and local citizens) and their identity construction through place experiences.
Her research explores holiday decision-making, food tourism, sustainable travel dilemmas, and stakeholder perspectives in place branding. Collaborative projects with organizations like the European Structural Fund and Danish Board of Business Development have produced practical outcomes. Key areas include family tourism dynamics, mature traveler behavior, and the role of local food in destination development.
Recent studies address post-pandemic tourism recovery, digital transformation in attractions, and green transitions in tourism infrastructure. She has supervised 3 PhD students and contributed to 17 research projects since 2003.
Therkelsen received the 2005 award for most downloaded article in Skandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. She actively participates in industry forums like the Danish Tourism Forum and serves on boards including InnoCoast and Foreningen Ordkraft.
