Dr. Aneilya Barnes is a Professor of History and Director of Undergraduate Research at Coastal Carolina University. She specializes in the Christianization of ancient Rome and the roles of women in the early church, analyzing these themes through Rome's sacred spaces and shifting landscapes. Her teaching portfolio includes courses on Late Antiquity, imperial Rome, early Christianity, and the early Islamic world.
- Ph.D. in History from the University of Arkansas (2007)
- M.A. in History from Arkansas Tech University (2002)
- Dual B.A. degrees in History/Political Science and Journalism from Arkansas Tech University (2000)
Her research intersects Late Antiquity, Roman Empire, and Early Christianity, with a focus on women’s agency in ecclesiastical contexts, sacred architecture, and the concept of Dark Tourism. She has contributed significantly to these fields through edited volumes and peer-reviewed chapters, including Symbols and Models of the Mediterranean (2017) and her essay on episcopal authority (2014).
Dr. Barnes joined Coastal Carolina University in August 2007 after completing her doctorate and maintains an active role in mentoring undergraduates through her directorship. Office hours for Fall 2024 are available via appointment through ZOOM.
