Andy Yan is an Associate Professor and Director of the City Program at Simon Fraser University, specializing in urban studies. He holds a Master of Urban Planning from UCLA and a Bachelor of Arts from Simon Fraser University. His research focuses on urban regeneration, applied demographics, GIS, neighborhood development, and quantitative research methodologies.
Yan's work bridges urban planning with social equity, examining housing affordability, community vitality, and historical urban development patterns. His articles frequently analyze urban policy impacts through demographic data and spatial analysis.
He has received numerous awards including the Royal Architectural Institute's Advocate for Architecture award and Planning Institute of British Columbia's Leadership Award. Yan actively contributes to civic initiatives through boards and task forces, including Burnaby's Zero Emission Buildings Taskforce and Vancouver City Planning Commission.
As principal investigator, Yan secured multiple CMHC/SSHRC grants and Lambda Alpha International research funding. His research informs municipal policy through expert testimony to the BC Supreme Court and House of Commons Standing Committee.
