Professor Andy Sumner is a Professor of International Development at King’s College London and President of the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI). He holds additional roles as a Visiting Professor at Padjadjaran University, Indonesia, and a Research Associate at the University of Oxford. His affiliations include the United Nations University, WIDER, and the Center for Global Development. Previously, he served as a Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Sussex, and held leadership roles in academic organizations such as EADI and the Development Studies Association (DSA).
Sumner’s research focuses on economic development, inequality dynamics, and global poverty, particularly in Southeast Asia. He has authored over 100 papers and 15 books, including Great Gatsby and the Global South and Global Poverty. His work challenges conventional development theories and emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches. He leads the ESRC-funded Global Poverty and Inequality Dynamics research network and advises policy bodies like the UK House of Commons and the UN’s IPCC.
Awards include Fellowships from the Academy of Social Sciences and the Royal Society of Arts. His research groups at King’s explore global production, technology, and inequalities. Sumner’s contributions span academic leadership, policy engagement, and global development advocacy, positioning him as a leading voice in development studies.
