Prof. Andy McKay is a Professor of Development Economics at the University of Sussex Business School. His research focuses on labour markets, poverty/inequality, agriculture, international trade, and health in Africa and Asia. He leads major projects such as the IDRC/DFID-funded study on young women's labour transitions in Eastern/Western Africa and an ESRC-DFID project on female labour supply and poverty escape. Previously, he served as Associate Director of the Chronic Poverty Research Centre (2005-2011) and has been a resource person for the African Economic Research Consortium since 2005.
Key educational affiliations include the Universities of Nottingham (1992-2003), Bath (2003-2006), and the Overseas Development Institute (2001-2005). His recent grants include ESRC funding for poverty escape mechanisms and MRC support for podoconiosis treatment trials in Ethiopia.
Research highlights include analyzing tax formalization in Africa, the impact of COVID-19 on SDGs, and the role of remittances in Thailand. His work emphasizes gender equity and policy advice to governments and international organizations.
