Andy Stewart is a Physician Scientist at the University of Cambridge, serving as a Consultant in Nephrology and General Internal Medicine at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. He leads the Clinical Renal Genetics and Tubular Diseases Service, focusing on rare renal disorders such as electrolyte abnormalities, cystic kidneys, and genetic kidney diseases. Stewart collaborates with Professor Menna Clatworthy at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, exploring renal tubular diseases, urinary tract innate immunology, and non-invasive renal biomarkers for UTI defense.
His research spans molecular mechanisms of kidney diseases, structural biology of ion channels, and innate immune responses in urinary tract infections. Key publications highlight work on neutrophil extracellular traps, single-cell genomics of kidney immunity, and atomic force microscopy of channel proteins. Stewart also supervises pharmacology and renal physiology courses at Christ's College, overseeing ~85 medical students.
