Andy Rotman is the Jill Ker Conway Chair in Religion and Director of Buddhist Studies at Smith College, specializing in early Indian Buddhism, South Asian media, and moral economies. He has been at Smith for over two decades, teaching courses on South Asian religion, ethics, and visual culture while engaging in interdisciplinary collaborations.
His research examines intersections of commerce and religion, particularly in Banaras bazaars. He has authored notable books including Hungry Ghosts and Amar Akbar Anthony, and co-edits Wisdom Publications' Classics of Indian Buddhism series. His work synthesizes textual analysis with ethnographic fieldwork in India.
