Abhishek Amar is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Hamilton College, Clinton, New York, USA. His teaching focuses on early Indian history, Buddhism, and inter-religious dynamics in South Asia. He previously conducted postdoctoral research at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg (KHK) 'Dynamics in the History of Religions' in Bochum, Germany, examining Buddhist-Hindu interactions in medieval India.

His research centers on the socio-religious history of south Bihar (6th–12th centuries CE), particularly the decline of Buddhism and its interplay with emerging Hindu orders like Vaiṣṇavism and Śaivism. He investigates how Buddhist communities negotiated coexistence with local polities and religious groups, using material culture studies from Bodhgayā as a historical lens.
Abhishek Amar received the KHK Fellowship (April 2009–March 2010) for his project Negotiating Co-existence of Buddhism, Vaiṣṇavism and Śaivism: An Examination of Inter-Religious Dynamics in Early Medieval Magadha, reflecting his expertise in cross-religious historical analysis.
