Professor Andy Hamilton holds joint appointments in Philosophy and Music at Durham University, where he serves as Director of the History of Philosophy Cluster. Educated at the University of St Andrews (MA, M.Phil, PhD), his career includes positions at Stirling, Keele, and Durham since 1994.
Hamilton's research spans three primary domains:
- Aesthetics of music and improvisation
- Wittgenstein's epistemology and philosophy of mind
- Political philosophy examining liberalism-conservatism relations
His publications reveal sustained engagement with musical aesthetics, particularly jazz improvisation's philosophical implications and critiques of perfectionism. Recent scholarship examines Wittgenstein's 'On Certainty' applications to historical epistemology and conceptual foundations of rhythm across artistic disciplines.
Hamilton maintains active artistic practice as a jazz pianist and critic, contributing to 'The Wire' and organizing workshops on improvisation aesthetics. He has supervised doctoral theses in philosophy of mind, aesthetics, and Wittgenstein studies.
