Professor Andy Hamilton is a Professor and Director of the History of Philosophy Cluster at Durham University's Department of Philosophy. He holds adjunct roles at the University of Western Australia and Hong Kong University. His research integrates aesthetics, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, and Wittgenstein studies. Hamilton earned his MA, M.Phil, and PhD from St Andrews University, with a doctoral thesis on self-consciousness. His work bridges academic philosophy and artistic practice, particularly in jazz and improvised music.
Research interests include Wittgenstein's epistemology, the autonomy of art, and political conservatism. He teaches Political Philosophy, Aesthetics, and Wittgenstein's philosophy. Administrative roles include Chair of Board of Examiners. His publications span monographs (e.g., Aesthetics and Music, Lee Konitz: Conversations on the Improviser’s Art), edited volumes, and articles in Philosophical Quarterly and British Journal of Aesthetics. He co-created an Impact Case Study on improvisation aesthetics for REF 2014.
A jazz pianist and writer for The Wire, Hamilton’s work often intersects music and philosophy. Upcoming projects include books on Billie Holiday and tradition as an aesthetic/political concept. His interdisciplinary approach links philosophical inquiry with artistic practice, reflecting his belief in humanistic and democratic aesthetics.
