Andy Futreal

Andy Futreal, Ph.D., is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Genomic Medicine at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he also serves as Vice President of Strategic Translational Programs and holds the Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Distinguished University Chair in Cancer Research. He leads the Futreal Laboratory, which is dedicated to uncovering the genomic basis of cancer to inform therapy development.

His research focuses on tumor heterogeneity, cancer evolution, and the genomic underpinnings of therapy resistance and sensitivity. By analyzing multi-region and longitudinal tumor samples across various cancers—including lung, ovarian, leukemia, and rare sarcomas—his team aims to enable personalized treatment strategies. He also oversees the Patient Mosaic™ project and the Microbiome Core Facility, expanding his impact across translational genomics and host-microbe interactions.

The scientific publications from his lab, appearing in journals such as Nature, Cell, and Science, reflect a strong emphasis on integrative genomic analysis, clonal evolution, immunogenomics, and therapeutic targeting. His work frequently explores molecular subtyping, resistance mechanisms, and biomarker discovery in diverse malignancies.

Dr. Futreal has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), highlighting his contributions to cancer science. His leadership extends to mentoring a multidisciplinary research team and guiding institutional research initiatives.

He advises a team of scientists and research coordinators in the Futreal Laboratory, contributing to training and innovation in genomic medicine. His grants and research programs support cutting-edge technologies in sequencing, bioinformatics, and translational applications.

Dr. Futreal leads the Futreal Laboratory and plays a key role in MD Anderson’s Microbiome Core Facility and the Patient Mosaic™ initiative, integrating genomic insights into clinical care through system-wide research programs.
