Robert C. Bast, M.D., is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Experimental Therapeutics at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he also holds the Harry Carothers Wiess Distinguished University Chair for Cancer Research. He serves as Director of Translational Research Career Development in the Division of Cancer Medicine and is a member of the GSBS faculty. His dual appointment extends to the Department of Gynecologic Oncology, reflecting his interdisciplinary impact.
Dr. Bast's research is centered on ovarian and breast cancers, with a strong emphasis on early detection, tumor biology, and translational therapeutics. His laboratory pioneered the discovery and clinical application of CA-125, a landmark tumor marker in ovarian cancer. Current work in the Bast/Lu Laboratory explores novel biomarkers, liquid biopsies, and targeted therapies to improve patient outcomes.
The 15 most recent publications highlight a consistent trajectory in translational oncology, integrating genomics, proteomics, and immunology to advance early detection and precision treatment. Key themes include overcoming drug resistance, developing antibody-drug conjugates, and leveraging artificial intelligence for multi-analyte cancer screening.
- AACR 2025 Scientific Achievement Award
Dr. Bast has led numerous NIH- and industry-funded grants, particularly in SPORE (Specialized Programs of Research Excellence) initiatives focused on ovarian and breast cancers. He mentors early-career scientists and postdoctoral fellows through structured training programs and has played a pivotal role in developing the next generation of cancer researchers. His lab, the Women's Cancer Research Laboratory (Bast/Lu Laboratory), fosters collaborative, interdisciplinary science aimed at transforming cancer care.
The laboratory conducts cutting-edge research in epithelial ovarian and breast cancers, focusing on molecular mechanisms of tumor progression, biomarker discovery, and therapeutic innovation. It operates within MD Anderson’s robust research infrastructure, collaborating with clinical teams to rapidly translate findings into patient benefit.
