André Freire is a Full Professor of Political Science at ISCTE-IUL (University Institute of Lisbon) and Senior Researcher at CIES-IUL (Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology). He has been a faculty member since 1996, serving as Director of the PhD in Political Science (2015–present) and former Director of the Bachelor's Degree in Political Science (2009–2015). His academic leadership roles include membership in the Steering Committee of the Comparative Candidate Study and the European research infrastructure MDem.
Freire holds a PhD in Political Sociology (2004, Distinction and Acclamation) and an Aggregation in Social Sciences (2010). His research focuses on political representation, electoral behavior, political institutions, and left-right ideological dynamics. He pioneered Portugal's National Electoral Studies (2002, 2005) and directs ongoing projects on political elites and voter linkages. His work bridges comparative politics, with studies in Southern Europe, the Baltic States, and Latin America.
Freire has authored over 30 books and 100+ academic articles, including seminal works like Left and Right in European Politics and Beyond the 'Contraption'. His articles analyze post-crisis politics, generational divides, and the impact of austerity on democratic representation. He has led major research initiatives like the Comparative Candidate Survey and the ER Observatory on Democracy and Political Representation.
Awarded for academic excellence, Freire is also a prominent public intellectual, contributing to media outlets like Público and Jornal de Letras. His research has informed EU policy debates and national electoral reforms, emphasizing the interplay between elite and mass political attitudes in democratic systems.
