André Barrinha is a Reader (equivalent to Associate Professor) in International Relations at the University of Bath's Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies. He joined Bath in September 2017, having previously held positions at Canterbury Christ Church University, University of Coimbra, and the University of Kent. Dr. Barrinha is affiliated with several research centers including the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Cyber Security, Institute for Digital Security and Behaviour (IDSB), and Centre for the Study of Violence.
His primary research examines the intersection of technology and international relations, with specialized focus on:
- Cyber diplomacy and digital statecraft
- European security architecture and foreign policy
- Multilateral governance of cyberspace
- Strategic narratives in international relations
- Russia and EU security dynamics
- Theoretical frameworks in security studies
Dr. Barrinha's publications demonstrate consistent focus on cybersecurity governance, diplomatic theory, and geopolitical analysis of digital conflicts. His recent work examines cyber dimensions of the Ukraine conflict, institutionalization of cyber diplomacy, and comparative analysis of national cyber strategies.
His scientific recognition includes:

He currently leads multiple funded research projects:
- Cyber Statecraft in an Era of Systemic Competition (EPSRC, 2023-2026)

- Cyber-diplomacy: Foreign Policy in the Digital Age (Leverhulme Trust, 2019-2022)
Dr. Barrinha founded and convenes several academic networks including the UACES RN INTERSECT and BISA European Security Working Group, and currently chairs the ISA Science, Technology and Art in International Relations section (2023-2025). He is actively accepting doctoral students.
