Dr. Andrzej Michalczyk is a Senior Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary History and East Central European History at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), Faculty of History. His research focuses on migration patterns, national identity formation, and borderland societies with a particular emphasis on Upper Silesia. He holds a PhD from the Max Weber Center for Cultural and Social Sciences at the University of Erfurt (2006) and completed history studies at the University of Warsaw (1995–2000).
Key research interests include German-Polish relations, historical migration studies, and microhistories of border regions. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in Brazil, Ukraine, Moldova, and Southeastern Europe, leading collaborative projects such as the German-Ukrainian oral history project (2016/17) and studies on migration from Upper Silesia to South America (2017–2018).
Notable awards include the Förderpreis (2007) for his doctoral thesis and the Arthur-Kronthal-Preis (2015/16) for his work on Upper Silesian myths. He has held visiting positions at Central Michigan University (2018), the University of São Paulo (2017), and the University of Strathclyde (2015). His teaching projects often involve international collaboration, such as the '1918/1945/1989 – German-Polish Upheavals in the History of Silesia' initiative (2018).
