Andrey N. Petrov is a Professor of Geography at the University of Northern Iowa and Director of ARCTICenter (Arctic, Cold and Remote Territories Interdisciplinary Center), holding the UArctic Chair in Arctic Community and Social-Ecological Systems and Sustainability (ACSESS). His work focuses on sustainability and resilience in Arctic/cold regions through collaborative projects in Alaska, Canada, and Northern Eurasia.
His research centers on modeling human-environment system sustainability amid socio-economic, environmental, and geopolitical Arctic changes, with strong emphasis on Indigenous community resilience. Key domains include climate adaptation, social-ecological dynamics, and Arctic geopolitics, reflected in his leadership of major interdisciplinary initiatives.
Dr. Petrov directed the Research Coordination Networks Arctic-FROST and Arctic-COAST, securing collaborative funding for Arctic sustainability and coastal resilience studies. He serves on the IASC Council and U.S. Polar Research Board while previously leading the International Arctic Social Sciences Association.
As ARCTICenter Director, he oversees an interdisciplinary team advancing knowledge on Arctic sustainability through integrated social-environmental research frameworks.
