Andrew Wright is a Lecturer in the Department of Engineering & Computing within the School of Architecture Computing and Engineering at the University of East London (UEL). He joined UEL's teaching staff in 2008 after industry experience and became Programme Leader in 2017. He developed two new modules for the Architecture Cluster and successfully launched a BA Product Design program in September 2020 aimed at students raised in digital culture.
His educational background includes a BSc First-class Honours in Product Design from UEL (2004) and a fast-track MA in Digital Design from the University of Huddersfield (2005).
Wright's research focuses on innovative solutions for Special Educational Needs (SEN), particularly through tactile and multi-sensory learning systems. His primary project involves an interactive wall with smart polymer tiles that generate light, sound, vibration, and other sensory effects controllable by teachers via computer. This design addresses the critical shortage of affordable, purpose-built SEN equipment in schools while enhancing play-based learning and developmental assessment.
He plans to pursue a PhD through UEL to advance this interactive product toward manufacturing, with field testing already arranged at multiple SEN schools.
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts
As Programme Leader for Contextual Studies and Business/Marketing Studies across all three years of the Product Design course, Wright teaches Levels 4-6 specializing in experimental design and hands-on model-making. He also serves as Link Tutor for Barking & Dagenham College, chairing meetings twice yearly and coordinating with external examiners.
His external roles include developing SEN-focused educational tools through partnerships with special needs schools, with research extending to emotional response analysis and integration with existing classroom technology like interactive whiteboards.
