Andrew Whelan is a Senior Lecturer in Policing at Birmingham Newman University, joining in August 2024. With over 21 years in West Midlands Police (WMP), he served as a Police Sergeant and spent 18 years as a tactical team member on the Firearms Operations Unit. He transitioned to academia post-WMP, teaching at Staffordshire University for nearly 3 years, where he led modules in PCDA and DHEP programs and supervised Year 3 research students. He holds an MA in Managing and Leading People (Coventry University) and an MA in Education (Staffordshire University).
His research focuses on the transition of military personnel into police roles, particularly as Firearms Officers, and on enhancing police education and student engagement. His academic qualifications and professional experience blend practical policing knowledge with innovative educational methodologies.
Andy is a fundraising trustee for Birmingham Dogs Home and a member of the NSPCC West Midlands Business Board, reflecting his commitment to community wellbeing. He is a Fellow of both the Higher Education Academy and Society for Education and Training.
