Andrew Thompson is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Waterloo and serves as the Global Governance Programs and Partnership Manager at the Balsillie School of International Affairs (BSIA). He holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Waterloo and is a senior fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI). Thompson specializes in international human rights, civil society movements, and fragile states, with a focus on global governance and humanitarian policy.

Thompson’s research spans international human rights, conflict and security, global institutions, and fragile states, with a particular emphasis on UN mechanisms, refugee protection systems, and civil society engagement. His work bridges historical analysis and contemporary policy, examining the evolution of human rights norms and their enforcement in both liberal and illiberal contexts.
His 15 most recent publications highlight interdisciplinary trends across human rights, refugee policy, and international diplomacy, often addressing UN reform, NGO advocacy, and humanitarian education.
