Andrew Tholl

Andrew Tholl is a Continuing Lecturer in Composition at the University of California, Santa Barbara's Department of Music. He also teaches at Ventura College and Pasadena Waldorf High School. A Los Angeles-based composer, violinist, drummer, and improviser, his work explores themes like the passage of time, physicality of music-making, noise, nostalgia, and interdisciplinary synthesis. His compositions have been performed globally by ensembles including wild Up, Formalist Quartet, and at venues like Walt Disney Concert Hall and REDCAT.

• Education: Degrees from Arizona State University, University of Michigan, and California Institute of the Arts (CalArts)
• Performance Roles: Member of wild Up (violinist/composer/personnel manager) and co-founder of Formalist Quartet. Active in pop/rock/punk and improvisational music.

Research Interests: Blending diverse musical styles, experimental composition, and collaborative performances. Notable works include Asphyxiation (violin concerto), adaptations of John Adams' works, and site-specific commissions like Getty - 7.15.16.

Ensembles/Labs: Involved with TempWerks, Paper Tiger Trio, and touchy-feely. Maintains a second musical life in pop/rock/punk and noise improvisation.
