Professor Andrew Spencer is an Adjunct Professor of Haematology at Monash University and Head of the Malignant Haematology and Stem Cell Transplantation Service at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. He leads the Myeloma Research Group and co-directs the ACRF Blood Cancer Therapeutics Centre at the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases. His research focuses on developing novel therapeutic strategies for multiple myeloma (MM), including drug resistance mechanisms, biomarker identification, and minimal residual disease (MRD) detection. He holds 4 international patents in MM therapeutics and has published over 185 peer-reviewed articles with over 12,600 citations.
Key roles include Chair of the Myeloma & Related Diseases Registry (MRDR), Co-ordinating Principal Investigator of the Australasian Myeloma Research Consortium (AMaRC), and member of the International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG). He is an invited investigator for the IMF Black Swan Research Initiative and chairs multiple national and international committees.
Research interests span translational research, with emphasis on CD45 phosphatase roles in MM progression, synergistic drug combinations for early-phase clinical trials, and advanced MRD detection techniques. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being (SDG 3).
Recent projects include the GLAM study (genomic liquid biopsy analysis for MM) and the aMMbition Phase 2 trial evaluating novel treatment sequences for MM patients. He has led over 76 research projects and holds executive roles in organizations like Myeloma Australia and the Australian Haemopoietic Progenitor Cell Transplantation Reference Committee.
Scientific awards and recognition include the LRF (UK) Fellowship, Royal Australian College of Physicians Fellowship, and multiple leadership roles in global hematological societies.
