Andrew Somogyi

Professor Andrew Somogyi is a practicing pharmacist and Professor at the University of Adelaide's School of Biomedicine within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. His roles include teaching pharmacology in undergraduate programs and leading a research program focused on pharmacogenomics, personalized healthcare, and drug response variability in diverse populations. He has held senior academic positions, including Deputy Head of Department and Associate Dean (Research).

Education:

• Master of Science (1978) and PhD (1982), Sydney University School of Pharmacy
• Postdoctoral research at the Medical Hospital of the University of Bonn (Germany)

Research Interests: Professor Somogyi's work centers on elucidating genetic and epigenetic factors influencing drug disposition and response. Key areas include pain therapeutics, cancer pharmacology, and ethnic disparities in drug efficacy/toxicity, particularly among Aboriginal Australians and Papua New Guineans. He pioneered the Royal Adelaide Hospital's Pharmacogenetics Service and currently leads clinical trials on ketamine for depression and opioid variability in pain management.

Teaching & Supervision: Supervises HDR/Masters students in pharmacogenomics and clinical trials. Teaches pharmacology across medicine, dentistry, and health science programs.

Professional Activities: Serves on advisory boards for drug safety and chairs the Clinical Pharmacogenomics Research Group. Provides nationwide consultancy on pharmacogenomic adverse drug reactions.
