Andrew Small is an Instructor of Music at Ferrum College, where he contributes to the Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Program. He holds a master’s degree in music performance from Yale University and has collaborated with institutions such as the Duke University Center for Documentary Studies and the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University.
Andrew Small specializes in traditional music styles of the Blue Ridge Mountains, including bluegrass, old-time, and country music. His work spans performance, composition, and media collaborations, such as theme music and soundtracks for the PBS documentary film Rock Castle Home and the podcast The Green Tunnel.
His scientific awards include:
- First Prize in Bluegrass Category, 29th Annual MerleFest Chris Austin Songwriting Contest (2021)
- Former Bluegrass Mandolin Champion of Australia
- Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship (2022) with master fiddler Eddie Bond
He performs in the duo Ashlee Watkins & Andrew Small and the old-time string band The Alum Ridge Boys & Ashlee, which won first place at the 85th Annual Old Fiddlers’ Convention in Galax, VA. Andrew Small also served as the inaugural Artist In Residence for The Crooked Road – Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail.
