Scholtz's research focuses on classical Greek drama, prose, and cultural history, with a specialization in the passions—particularly desire and envy—in the Ancient Mediterranean World. He also examines the social psychology of Greek rhetoric, the intersections of Ancient Greek and Roman sexuality, ideology, politics, and literature, and applies literary theory to classical studies.
His work, such as Concordia Discors: Eros and Dialogue in Classical Athenian Literature (2007), explores the interplay of emotions, rhetoric, and cultural dynamics in classical texts, contributing to broader discussions in Classics, Greek Literature, and Literary Theory.
